The aim of this study is to contribute to the understanding of how people process word combinations visually.
The principal researcher is Ms. Sydelle de Souza who is attached to the School of Informatics at the University of Edinburgh. The study is being carried out under the supervision of Prof. Jennifer Culbertson and Dr. Frank Mollica.
You have been invited to take part in this study because you are an adult, native speaker of English.
You will be asked to perform two tasks. This first is a simple word recognition task wherein you will be shown a verb-noun combination in English (e.g., COUNT STARS). You will be asked to indicate (via a keypress) whether this combination of words is acceptable or not in English. Then you will be asked to judge whether the verb in the combination is being used literally or not. The whole process should take approximately 8 minutes. No background knowledge is required and there are no right or wrong answers. We are interested in your intuitions about these word combinations. There will be instructions to guide you throughout this process.
No. Taking part in this study is entirely voluntary. If you decide to take part, you are free to withdraw at any time and without giving a reason. All you have to do is close the tab or the browser window.
